Four students were awarded tickets to an intergovernmental summit on transparency and accountability in London that will take place on Oct. 31 –Nov. 1, said Kuntoro Mangkusoebroto, head of the Presidential Working Unit for Supervision and Management of Development , UKP4, on Thursday.
The students are Fahmi Islami and Hanifah Ahmad from the University of Indonesia in Depok, Zakia N. Syifa from Airlangga University in Surabaya, East Java, and Biondi Sanda from Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
The students were selected from among 40 candidates from across the country who participated in the Model Open Government Partnership in Jakarta on Oct 5-6, an event in which they were tasked to present simulations to facilitate government transparency.
“The four students were the best participants,” said UKP4 associate director Jourdan Hussein.
The UKP4 Working Unit is part of Indonesia’s core team for the movement called Open Government Indonesia, which was launched by Vice President Boediono last year. The movement to encourage transparency among government institutions followed Indonesia’s participation in the Open Government Partnership, a voluntary inter-government movement.
At the London summit, Indonesia takes over from the United Kingdom as the lead chair of the Partnership, which now includes 60 governments.
Youth involvement “is the first of its kind” in the Partnership, said Tara Hidayat, the official in charge of the OGI. (The Jakarta Post)
