LAPOR!, the government’s online public service complaint system, is among seven shortlisted projects for the Bright Spots Award, the winner of which will be announced next week in London, UK.

LAPOR! systems programmer Arkka Dhiratara will present the project at the Open Government Partnership Summit, to be held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, said Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, head of the Presidential Working Unit for Supervision and Management of Development (UKP4), on Thursday.

The award is awarded to the “most inspiring examples of how open and accountable government is changing people’s lives”, according to the United Kingdom Cabinet Office earlier this month.

In November 2011, UKP4 set up lapor.ukp.go.id, an online portal for complaints about public services, which is accessible also through social media and text message (number 1708).

So far the portal has over 225,350 registered users, receiving an average of 1,435 messages every day.

During the London summit Indonesia will officially be named the third lead chair of the Open Government Partnership,  a global voluntary movement among governments, along with the United States and the United Kingdom.

“Vice President Boediono will receive the chairmanship from British Prime Minister David Cameron,” Kuntoro said. Boediono launched the Open Government Indonesia movement on Jan. 24, 2012, which involves NGOs such Transparency International Indonesia and a number of government offices.

The Partnership, initiated by US President Barack Obama, encourages innovations that promote government transparency through public participation, to achieve better accountability. (Anr/The Jakarta Post)
